Hot work is defined as work involving burning, welding, or similar operation that is capable of initiating fires or explosions. Hot work may be performed on university property with proper permits and training.

Open burns are permitted for research and academic purposes only.

Barbeque grills or open-fired grills are allowed on campus when careful precautions are taken. Permanent BBQs can be found on campus around student residential buildings. Take the following precautions when using grills on campus:

Principle investigators, lab managers and instructors should refer to the lab safety guidelines for more information about minimizing fire hazards and risks. Storage cabinets for chemicals and other flammable substances must adhere to flammable storage cabinet guidelines. These guidelines apply to research labs, art studios and anywhere where flammable substances are stored and used.
All flammable and combustible liquids, regardless of the quantity, must be stored properly. For most situations this means that flammable and combustible liquids will be stored in an approved flammable storage cabinet. All flammable cabinets shall be used in accordance with their manufacturer guidelines. All approved flammable cabinets shall be stamped by a recognized safety certifying organization e.g. [Underwriter's Laboratories (UL)].
