BBQs and Tailgates
Barbeque grills or open-fired grills are allowed on campus when careful precautions are taken. Permanent BBQs can be found on campus around student residential buildings. Take the following precautions when using grills on campus:
- Never leave the grill unattended while lit.
- Grills should never be used indoors or too close to structures like pop-up tents, balconies, garages.
- Follow all manufacturer's instructions regarding operation, set-up, maintenance, clean up and clearance to combustibles.
- Check hose integrity and hose connections to ensure there is no release of gas. Soapy water applied to hoses and connections will easily and safely reveal any leaks.
Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the Department of Environmental Health & Safety.
Lab, research spaces and classrooms
Principle investigators, lab managers and instructors should refer to the lab safety guidelines for more information about minimizing fire hazards and risks. Storage cabinets for chemicals and other flammable substances must adhere to flammable storage cabinet guidelines. These guidelines apply to research labs, art studios and anywhere where flammable substances are stored and used.
Flammable storage cabinets
All flammable and combustible liquids, regardless of the quantity, must be stored properly. For most situations this means that flammable and combustible liquids will be stored in an approved flammable storage cabinet. All flammable cabinets shall be used in accordance with their manufacturer guidelines. All approved flammable cabinets shall be stamped by a recognized safety certifying organization e.g. [Underwriter's Laboratories (UL)].
